Hello to all my beautiful friends and family. Happy Friday! We made it through another week. YAY! I am doing another accountability check on your New Years' goals. How is it going? Are you still sticking to them, or have you abandoned them already? One of my New Years' goals was to stay active and close all my rings on my watch at least five days a week. I am doing a pretty good job so far. Let's hope I keep up with this motivation💪🏼
Today, we will chat about my week one at my first job. You might wonder, what's so special about it? It's is my first big girl job right out of college, so the vibes and the experiences are entirely different. I learned a lot during the first week, and I will share my experience with you.
Without any wait, let's go!
Nature Of My Job
To begin with, I would like to enlighten you with what I do for work. I work in a consulting company. My job is to talk to clients, gather their requirements, and then deliver a working product. It's very different from a traditional software engineering job. Most of my friends right out of college are currently working as SWEs. I have interned as a software engineer and as a consultant, so I can speak from my experience on both ends. Software engineering requires a lot of coding, code reviews, and collaboration. My specific role also requires coding but is not as intense as swe(software engineers). It's almost like fifty-fifty. The first fifty gathers functional requirements and advises the clients while the other fifty develops that solution.
Networking Is The Key
My job also differs a lot because it actively requires networking. It's a project-based job, so to work on your preferred project, you have to network with professionals. This ultimately helps you build the management and soft leadership skills essential for promotion. Many people think that most of the money is in engineering jobs, but the truth is, most of the money is made in leadership positions. My project may or may not require me to travel depending on the covid situation.
Boundaries Are Important
I know it's only week one, but I already get a vibe that work will keep me "busy". I define this "busy" as overworking. So having a boundary is essential to avoid burnout and keep your mental health at a sane level. They gave me a company phone so that I could stay connected. Once I start my project, I will set healthy boundaries with my team because it's very common to get overworked in my field.
In Conclusion
The first week of work was 9/10. I only gave that rating because some sessions were kind of repetitive for me as I was an intern this past summer. But it feels great to be out of school, network with professionals, AND get paid to learn all these incredible things. I also had a remarkable and productive routine which I will discuss in another blog. Lastly, having healthy breakfast/lunch and dinner came in clutch when it came down to my energy levels.
Till next time, peace✌🏼
