Twelve months ago, as 2024 was kicking off, I found myself sitting on my couch, pondering life’s big questions. One thought hit me hard: “What part of the world are we going to see this year?” And just like that, my 2024 travel adventures had their punchline.
Fast forward to now—here’s how I plan, budget, and maximize every trip. Step 1: Picking My Destinations
People always ask, “How do you choose where to go?” The answer isn’t straightforward, but it’s strategic. Every international trip I take is about hitting two birds with one stone: family and adventure.
Family Comes First
As Dom from Fast and Furious says: “Family first.” I plan trips around family events or availability. For years, I’d promised my aunt in Sweden I’d visit her. Last year, Iceland was on my bucket list, and since Sweden is right next door, it made sense to include it in my itinerary.
Pro tip: If you’re traveling internationally, consider adding neighboring countries to your itinerary. More countries, more fun!
The Adventure Destination
The second part of my trip is all about me. Last year, I was chasing waterfalls, hot springs, and volcanoes. This year? I wanted deserts and northern lights. (Yes, complete opposites. Don’t ask—I don’t know what I was thinking either.)
Bonus: The Layover Country
Never underestimate the power of a layover. Many countries offer layover tours, and you’d be surprised what you can accomplish in just 30 hours. Even if it’s a quick stop at the airport for a fridge magnet or a key chain, it’s bragging rights, baby.
Step 2: Timing the Trip
When to travel depends on family availability, events, and, of course, the deals.
This year, my nephew’s first birthday was top priority. I planned my trip around his birthday, which conveniently fell during a cheaper travel period. If family isn’t a factor, I always recommend traveling during the off-season (aka when kids are in school). Think fewer crowds, lower prices, and mild weather.
Step 3: Booking Like a Pro
Booking trips is where it gets real. My vibe is “Boujee on a Budget”—no hostels or backpacking, but also not Ritz-Carlton everywhere. Here’s how I balance it:
Hack no. 1: Credit Card Points
Credit card points are a game-changer. On my recent international trip, I took ten flights—yes, ten. Three of those flights (worth $2,000) were completely covered by points I saved up all year.
Hack no. 2: Watch for Deals
Subscribe to flight and hotel deal alerts. The moment a price drops, you’ll be the first to know.
Hack no. 3: Employer Discounts
Check if your job offers travel perks. I scored five-star hotels at a fraction of the cost through my employer. That was a full-circle moment—adulting win unlocked!

Planning trips isn’t just about where to go; it’s about creating experiences that balance family, adventure, and affordability.
