"Moving is so much fun". Said no one ever. Typically it's a significant source of stress for many people, but there might be one percent of the people who like moving. I love the idea of moving to a new place and arranging things, but it's the part where you have to pack and actually move everything is where it sucks. Moving usually costs a lot of money and is very time-consuming. I lived with my sister, and we moved her every two years until she finally got a house. Moving days were a big challenge because she's somewhat of a hoarder. Since I moved out of her place almost four years ago, I just recently moved. Every time we moved her, I noted what I would do differently on my next move. So, when I recently moved, surprisingly, it wasn't that bad. I made a list and followed it religiously to stay on track.
Today I'll share a couple of moving hacks that will ease your next move and keep your stress levels under control.
1. Pack Ahead of Time of Your Move
Listen, don't leave everything for the last minute. Your future self will thank you. Plan out your days ahead and pack up the things you won't need early on. The night before moving, I always found myself packing and trying to catch up, but this time around, I went out and had fun.
2. Buy Essential Items Every Month
Realistically speaking, I started gathering things for my new apartment three months before the move. Every time I went to Walmart or Target, I picked one or two items that would go under my new apartment budget. I shopped at sales and thrift some great deals. This way, you don't have to receive a heavy bill from your creditor at the end of the move-in month.
3. Make a list
The list comes in very handy and keeps you organized. Make multiple lists. Make one list of things you have to pack and one list of what you have to get for the new apartment. You won't regret it.
4. Get Rid of Things
My rule is that if a clothing item has not been worn in a year and doesn't have a sentimental value, it gets donated. The same goes for the rest of the items. Getting rid of things you don't need gives you more space to add new things and promotes a minimalistic lifestyle.
5. Buy Stuff on Sales
I bought a lot of stuff during the prime day and July 4th sales. That helped me tremendously because when I moved into my new apartment, I already had a bed frame, a mattress, and all the essential items.
6. Plan Out Early if You Plan to Hire Movers or Not
I didn't have furniture besides my desk, so it was easier to move alone. But if you are someone who has a lot of furniture, then decide early on if you will hire movers or if your friends will help you. Get multiple quotes to compare your options. Make a budget for moving so that your finances and mental health stay sane while all the moving chaos takes place.
7. Prioritize and Buy Some Stuff Later
One thing I didn't do was buy everything during the first month. I waited to move in to see what my roommate brought and what I had and then made a prioritized list of how we would furnish our living room. I realized some of the items on my list weren't even necessary anymore. Way to save big bucks!
In Conclusion
Stay on top of it earlier in the process. This reduces last-minute workload, especially in case of emergencies. Try to find loopholes to save money, thrift, check out FB marketplace, and other resources to find cheaper furniture. I wish you good luck with your move!
Happy Moving and see you next time, Peace🚚
